Project overview
The Rumbek region in Sudan is one of the largest war-torn areas in Africa, where many children have lost most if not all of their older relatives. In addition, well over seven million people have suffered from drought in the region. Rumbek Youth Sports Association, using the model from Mathare in Kenya, enhances knowledge of HIV/AIDS and awareness of environmental issues. This both helps to improve the lives for themselves and others in their communities.
How we achieve these goals
HIV/AIDS education is achieved through seminars and prevention training. Promoting environmental issues is addressed through the ‘clean communities’ ethic by encouraging the young people to participate in clean-up days and teaching them to take responsibility for their own environment.
Our impact so far
The project has now expanded to include three other areas in the Rumbek region. RYSA is continuing to engage local people so they can begin to be more conscious of health and environmental issues and take on challenges that they face in their daily lives.
