Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest cricketer of the modern generation, and Chinese basketball giant Yao Ming have been elected the newest members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The news was announced at the 16th Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai.
Sachin Tendulkar retired from cricket in 2013 after scoring a world record 15,921 runs for India in Test matches and 18,426 in One Day Internationals. He is the only man to score 100 centuries in international cricket.
Upon being inducted into the Laureus Academy, Sachin Tendulkar said: “I would encourage all youngsters to get outside and play sport and get healthy."
Yao Ming is already a winner of a Laureus Award, having been presented with the Laureus Newcomer of the Year Award in 2003 in recognition of his impact on US basketball in the NBA. Speaking after the announcement of his induction into the Laureus World Sports Academy, Yao Ming spoke of his ambitions as a Laureus Academy Member. He said: “I don’t want to do anything in big movements. I think we can’t always pursue the end goal or score, we need to focus on the process and the detail, we will achieve great things.”
They now become the 51st and 52nd members of the Laureus Academy, a unique collection of the world’s greatest living sportsmen and sportswomen dedicated to changing the world through the power of sport.
Olympic legend Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, inducted the two super stars at the Laureus World Sports Awards, the premier honours event on the international sporting calendar, staged at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.
Edwin Moses said: “On behalf of the Laureus World Sports Aacademy, I would like to welcome Sachin Tendulkar and Yao Ming. Laureus is delighted to have two such illustrious sporting legends as new members of the Laureus Family. Sachin is one of the greatest cricketers of all time and Yao Ming is one of those people who is a sporting legend, but who also shows a greater commitment than simply what happens in the sports hall.”
